In my absence

If you’re a regular visitor to this blog, you will have noted my absence of late. I haven’t given up on the idea of writing, but I did take a break to try something different, something I had been thinking about for a while. I re-trained as a care assistant, which as a job was both rewarding and exhausting. I regret to say that it’s not for me, but I definitely don’t regret trying, because it’s shown me a different side of me, and highlighted some qualities in me I didn’t know I had.

As a job, being a care assistant is one of the most challenging roles I’ve ever had to do, and yet the tasks are often the most simple. In essence, you are there to help someone to complete tasks which you do without even thinking about it. Often, just raising the arms enough to wash the face is near impossible for these people, and they are so grateful for you to just help them to do these things. Some are almost totally isolated from the outside world, and are happy for you to sit and have a cup of tea and chat for half an hour of the day. Of course, there are the more difficult service users, who are literally dependant on you for everything, and find it difficult to comprehend the world around them, but just knowing that you are trying to communicate with them, to hear their thoughts, is often what brings them peace of mind and contentment.

And after all, isn’t that what we’re all trying to do, as writers? Our disability is our lack of presence, our task is to make others understand us through mere words on a page. Yes, it can be frustrating at times, but what a feeling when you just know that someone gets it, that the person reading those words not only understands them but feels them. Isn’t that what makes all this hard work worth it?

I admit that I’m a little too obsessive about my blogger statistics. Yep, I know it’s really, really sad, but I check them nearly as much as I check my Facebook page or my twitter page. I just find it really interesting that today, someone checked in and read the post ‘How celebrities have changed the way we learn’. I wonder why they picked that, over all the other, newer posts on here? I can also see that the most read post ever was ‘How to get a job just by asking’, closely followed by ‘This morning I have been mostly browsing the net’ and ‘Reasons to be cheerful’.
Most of my readers are from the UK, the USA, and Germany. I also have some readers from Israel and Malaysia.
During this month, my busiest day was on the 5th of July. And today, 4 people have clicked on the ‘My Work’ page.
Does all this mean anything? Well, probably not, as most of my views appear to be directed here from links I post on twitter and Facebook and various other forums. But the geek in me just likes to know…

The worst boss I ever had

I’ve had quite a lot of different jobs, in lots of different industries. I’ve worked in a Museum, an accountancy firm, a metal casting company, a college…to name a few. In those jobs, I’ve worked for all kinds of different people, managers with very different approaches to the way an office should be run. Most, I’ve got along with, some I haven’t, but when I think about my worst ever boss, the thing that I remember is the awful way she’s treated me. Every day, she put me down, made me feel inferior, told me I was useless, that I wasn’t working fast enough or hard enough, and made me believe that even though I was working the best I could that I was being downright lazy.

And I’m writing about this terrible boss, because she is still my boss, and she’s probably yours too.

That’s right; it’s me.

This morning, I had a project to do, so I got myself ready, booted up my computer, and sat down. After I set up my document, I stopped, because my boss said, “You know, this is a hard project. It’s going to take you ages, and what makes you think you’re qualified to do it anyway?”

My confidence left me. I stared at the blank screen, and couldn’t do a thing.

“See,” said my boss, “you don’t even know how to start, do you my dear? Why don’t you just run along and do something easier?”

Sometimes, I listen, but today, I decided not to. I straightened my posture, put my hands on the keyboard, and did the project anyway. It took me just over an hour, and really wasn’t that hard at all.

I think there are lessons to be learned there. Firstly, no-one is ever harder on you than you. Secondly, if you don’t have faith in yourself, who else will? And thirdly, and probably most importantly, always treat yourself with the same respect you would treat others.

And there ends my lecture for today.

How to get a job just by asking

When I first decided that I wanted to write as a freelancer, I had all these ideas of the type of work that I wanted to do. My aim was, and still is, to build up a portfolio of work, so that I could one day go it alone and make a living from working for myself.

But there were two little obstacles I had to overcome; I had no experience and no contacts. No-one was going to take me seriously because I had no previous work to show them. I had to find someone to hire me to write for them, and trust that I could do as good a job as I promised I could, without having anything to show.

The first words I wrote.

I have always been a writer. For years, I wrote nothing but fiction, but it wasn’t until I had one of my short stories published in an online magazine that I started to believe that I was any good. I wrote more stories, and got no bites. I felt disheartened. I tried my hand at writing a factual story, about the sinking of the famous ship, the Lusitania, and sent it to a magazine. They didn’t publish it, but I did get a handwritten note from the editor, saying although he like the story, the magazine had already published something about the Lusitania earlier in the year.

I wrote some more short stories, and eventually got an email from Another Realm magazine, who wanted to publish. That story, ‘Time Waits for Norman’, is due to be published next month.

But in order to get noticed as a freelance copywriter, I needed to write more factual articles.

I had a few ideas, so I wrote articles around them, and submitted them to Squidoo. I intended that these would at least provide a place to point to, should anyone wish to see samples of my writing. As it turns out, I haven’t had to use these yet, but they are there online, if I need them.

Finding my first clients.

I read a lot of different blogs about freelancing, and the one question that gets asked time and time again is ‘how do you find clients as a freelancer?’ I don’t really know the answer to this question, I’m still trying to figure that one out, but I can tell you how I got my first three clients.

I had this idea that I wanted to work with people who lived in my local area. As far as I know, there are not many freelancers offering what I offer where I live, and I didn’t know how to get people and businesses to understand why hiring a freelancer is a good idea. Because I didn’t have a portfolio yet, I knew I’d have a hard time finding paid work, so I emailed my local Parish Councillor, and asked if I could be involved in the Parish Newsletter. To my surprise, he asked me into his office the following week, where we discussed how I could help to edit the quarterly newsletter, and how I could get involved in writing for the website.

My next project came when I bid for a job on people per hour. I was lucky in that I only applied for this one project, and it so happened that the lady was looking for someone based in the UK. I was the only UK bidder. She wanted someone to write blogs for her online store, wowthankyou.com. As we speak she is setting up a new website, and I will be writing a regular blog for her.

My third job came when I was looking at other UK based freelance writers’ websites, to get an idea of what they offered. On a whim, I emailed one of them, and asked for her advice, and if she ever hired other writers to help out with surplus work. Almost immediately she emailed me back, saying she’d keep me in mind for some projects she had coming up. I have since written a few articles for her, one of which she has published on her own blog, and have also helped her by creating a couple of databases.

The next step.

My fourth client? Well, I’m still working on that one. But at least now I’ve got a little more experience, a few more things to show, and a teeny bit more confidence.

In my opinion, this is all just a game of chance. There is no right or wrong. But I’ve learned that you get nowhere if you sit back and wait for jobs to come to you, you have to be prepared to get out there and look for opportunities. And you have to have the courage to ask stupid questions, and the cheek to ask for work. The old saying is true – if you don’t ask, you don’t get.

Dogs, barbecues, and mobile phones.

It pretty weird how dogs personalities and moods can change. When we fist brought Lea home last summer, she was so friendly with other dogs, but now she seems to have changed her mind and barks at pretty much every other dog we come into contact with. I'm not sure when it started, really, but we always used to let her off the lead on our walks, and she was fine, but a few months ago, she attacked another dog, for no obvious reason. So now I'm afraid to take her off the lead, and she seems to have gotten a bee in her bonnet whenever she so much as sees another dog. Funnily enough, she seems ok when the other dog is off the lead, or she is on a long lead. We've tried tempting her away with treats, which works some of the time, as long as you can clock the dog before she does, and we tried her on a halti, but she chewed it in half the first day we used it. Short of paying for her to have specialist dog training, I'm not sure what else I can try.

I'm writing another article this week for Cosy Home Blog, giving information about the pros and cons of both charcoal and gas barbecues. I was sitting here on my laptop this morning with the TV on, and overheard that it's barbecue week this week! And with the promise of nice weather this weekend, perhaps I should get David to drag our barbecue out of the shed. Yum!

I also heard on the news this morning that this worry about mobile phones and cancer has reared its ugly head again. I remember that this was a big worry when mobiles first became popular, but it seems to have been forgotten about for quite a while now. It makes me wonder, really, after all this time, and with the millions of people who are using mobile phones these days, surely this issue must have been researched and improved by the mobile phone companies? Where is the evidence that there truly is a link between the technology and the illness? This article from the NHS website seems to think that it's all been blown up out of all proportion - what do you think?

Ebook almost ready!

I have been working on getting my ebook, temporarily tiltled 'Blog for your livelihood' finished, and I'm excited to say that I'm very nearly there! All the text is done, images and links are added, and I now just have to edit and tweak a few things!

Yesterday I was worrying that I wouldn't get it finished before the end of the month, but I've surprised myself. I'm pretty pleased with it so far, it'll look great when I've prettied it up a bit more.

Britain's got talent 2011

I'm really looking forward to watching the 2011 BGT, especially with the new lineup. Let me say that this is the only one of these type of shows that I watch - I usually hate all these singing and dancing type things and avoid them like the plague, but I really love this one, because it's more of a traditional talent show, and those have been around forever.

This morning, I have completed an article which I was asked to write for Rachel Newcombe, for her site Cosy Home. I'll shout out when it's up.

I'm also working to get my ebook ready for the end of the month - fingers crossed it'll be launched first week in May. It hasn't got an official tilte yet, but it's a guide for small businesses on setting up and running a blog. If you have any suggestions for a title, or you'd like a free copy, please contact me.

Current Projects/Update

Well here we go with yet another late update! Have a few new things to share with you this time, so hold on to your hats!!

Unfortunately I'm still no further forward with mum's memoirs, but I still want to get them completed - I'll just keep that one on the back burner until I've got more time to dedicate to it.

I have a meeting with the Parish Clerk at Ketley Parish Council this week, to discuss plans for the next newsletter and possibly to get myself involved in updating the news page on their website. Although this is work I do voluntarily i.e. it's not a paid project, I'm keen to get involved with little community projects like this, because I'm interested in the history of the area and in seeing how the town has and still is evolving.

I am in the middle of writing a new ebook, aimed at helping companies and charities to set up and maintain a blog to promote themselves. I'm trying to keep the format quite simple, but I'm including some items which could even help those who already have a blog but don't quite know what to do with it. I've temporarily called it 'blog for your livelihood', but I'm not really happy with that, so will probably change it once it's written. I will keep you posted on that project.

I'm also beginning to piece together ideas for my next newsletter, which is due out in March. I don't think I mentioned on here when I sent out the last one in January - sorry! If you want a copy, please email me and I'll forward one to you straight away!

The Great Onsite/Offsite Debate

As a freelance writer looking for work, I have been selling myself on the premise that I can work remotely from my home office. The great thing, from the employers point of view, about this, is that every aspect of the project can be completed without the worry of having to find me office space, draw up a temporary contract, set me up on the payroll system, and then have me ‘popping in’ to my employers office to ‘chat’ about the project every five minutes.

The whole process is quite simple, as once the project has been outlined (usually via email), the project contract is drawn up by the freelancer, a price agreed, and the project can be completed, with nothing more than a few emails, and sometimes if the project requires it, a phonecall or quick meeting.

But there are some projects which are a bit more tricky. And this is all down to a little thing called software.

There are literally hundreds of different types of software, and depending on the type of work that it needs to do, many variations of how that software is used. Of course, it would be impossible for the freelancer to buy every conceivable type of software, and could not possibly spare the time to learn how to use them all.

This is where On-site freelancing can be brilliant. She can be employed on pretty much the same basis, only would work within the company’s office for the duration of the project, and use the company’s software, and have people who know how, and can teach her how to use it to boot.

Depending on the location, any travelling costs can be within the cost of the project, so there is not likely to be any further costs that you won’t know about beforehand.

There is an idea that a freelance writer will only work from their own premises, but this is simply not always the case.

The Oxford Dictionary describes ‘freelance’ as:

‘self-employed and hired to work for different companies on particular assignments’

So whether on-site of off-site, hiring a freelancer can be as flexible as you want it to be!

What the weekend is for

Since I've been working a normal 5 day week again (yes, in a proper job). I find it easier to make use of the weekends, because I appreciate the shorter time I have to get things done.

This weekend, David and I have:

Almost finished decorating the hall
Attended a wedding fair and discuss 'wedding' things
Got the dog in the car and taken her for a 'proper' walk
Caught up with some other stuff around the house which would normally have been put off

And it feels pretty good to have done these things. And I'm looking forward to work tomorrow, for however long it lasts.

Looking for new opportunities

I have recently started an interesting employment project for a local college, who have employed me for a short erm project, to imput questions into a computer, in order to set up an online exam/testing system. It's got me thinking that there must be hundreds of companies out there who have little projects like this where a freelance writer would be perfect.

If most of you who read this blog (and you must have a reason) think that people like small business owners, teachers, web designers, employment agencies, hoteliers....etc, could not employ a freelance writer, do not and would not ever NEED a freelance writer, then think again.

Right now, at a time when businesses all over the world are struggling to recover from the credit crisis, employing a freelancer might be a wonderful alternative to hiring a temp, or even a full time staff member. The opportunites are endless - from simple data entry projects, entering text into websites, or writing descriptions for catalogues or ebay pages. And because you only pay for the hours the freelancer puts in, your not paying for coffee breaks, or lulls when work is slack in the office.

So what are your thoughts? Is there a future in the corporate world for freelance writers?

Why I'm in a writing group and all that

For some time now I have been a member of WritingForums.com and WritingForums.org. As a freelance writer, I spend my writing time on my own, without the usual support you would find in a normal office environment.

I write because I find that it’s the easiest way for me to express myself. I would rather explain myself to someone using the written word, rather than having to stand up and speak. That’s just the way I am.

I am not the perfect writer – far from it. Like many others, I constantly doubt what I am writing and how I am writing, and I don’t have the luxury of asking my co-workers for help, because I don’t have any.

In these cases, I have found using the writing forums invaluable. This morning, I spent a long time searching for ways to add photos within the text of this blog, as far as I could see, I could only place one before the text. No matter what I put into the search engine, I could not find a solution to this problem.

So I asked the forums. As many of the people there are in the US, I naturally have to consider the time difference if I post a question, so it’s not always ideal if I need an answer straight away. But if I can be patient for a few hours, I can almost guarantee that someone, somewhere, will read my post and will know the solution.

Of course, if you’re going to take information from the forum, it’s only polite that you give something back. If you can take a little time each day or even just once a week, to read other people’s posts and offer your expertise, it will not only be very well received, but you will get to know the regular members, and come to think of them as friends, albeit virtual!

I must admit, I don’t post on these forums as much as I should, something I need to work on! But as a link to other writers, it really is a wonderful tool.

Unfinished Monkey Business

Hello Friends!

After just reading this post, I wanted to update you on where I am with my projects now. It seems to me that my 'to do' list is growing instead of shrinking, and time to write is becoming a luxury of late. But I'm sure I'll get there!

I have begun to type up Mum's memoirs from the recordings I have so far, I thougt I had more on the recorder than I actually do - just over an hours worth. That covers most of her childhood, and touches on her leaving school and how she got her first job, but now that I've started to get it down on screen, I realise that there's going to be a bit more to fill in later. I imagined that I would just type the story how she told it, but it's not quite that simple. My Mum has a regional accent from the village where she grew up, which when written down can be difficult to understand. And I find that I am having to change the words a little to make sense of the story, and omit some parts altogether, as she's repeated things or they are simply not relevant to what she's talking about. Then, after taking out all the 'erm', and 'like I say', and 'well, you know''s out, it kind of shrinks the text a little bit!

So, I'll be chipping away at that, then going through it to see what I need to re-record or clarify with her.

I have recieved the first copy of the newletter which I wrote for Ketley Parish Council. I'm not sure at this point whether I will stay on the committe for the Parish Plan, as my involvement with it is minimal anyway. I was appointed to edit the copy, but it seems that there are others already involved in doing that.

I'm still awaiting news from Another Realm magazine, who will be publishing my story, Time Waits for Norman next year. They should be bringing out their list before Christmas, so I'll keep you all posted on that too.

How celebrities have changed the way we learn

As a copywriter, I often turn to the knowledge of experts in order to write both factual and fictional things. In my pre-internet days, if I wanted to learn how to do something, I would either ask someone who I thought might have the knowledge, or pick up a book on the subject.

How things have changed! Now, if I want to know something, I don’t have to speak to anyone, of even leave my house. I just search for it on the internet. But we all know that information on the world wide web is not always so reliable. So how do we know that what we’re reading is written by an expert?

We ask someone we trust, of course!

Say you want to know how to cook something. Which expert comes to mind here? You could ask your Mum, you could look in a recipe book, or you could seek the knowledge of a well-known expert. How about Jamie Oliver? Or Nigella?

Fancy a bit of gardening? Let’s ask Alan Titchmarsh how!

The truth is, we have grown to trust in these people because they are passionate and knowledgeable about what they do. They are experts. We have witnessed them doing their jobs, and they can give us absolute confidence that we ourselves can do what they do.

Sure, we give these people a hard time sometimes, it’s our nature. But if they’re helping us all to empower ourselves with the knowledge to make our own lives better, then don’t they deserve to be where they are?

A few days ago, I recieved an email from anotherealm magazine. They will be publishing a story of mine, called 'Time Waits for Norman', which I wrote over 12 months ago. It's taken a while (I submitted it last December!), but my patience has paid off, and I am now just waiting for the schedule for 2011. More news on that soon.

I have submitted the copy for Ketley Parish Council's December newsletter, and that should be approved later this week. It's a project I have very much enjoyed, I hope to do more of. As for my own newsletter, I'm putting that on hold, for now.

I'm afraid I might have become addicted to reading other copywriters' blogs. Blogs like Copyblogger, Nick's Writing Blog, and Freelance Writer's Blog, to name but a few. Whilst they serve to give me plenty of ideas and inspiration for my own writing, most of them deal with SEO writing and blogging, which is not entirely what I'm about. I suppose both might touch upon my own blog here, but the projects I want to be working on are an entirely different animal, and one which the majority of these blogs do not deal with at all.

Although I realise that today's media is so reliant on the internet and web content, I think that there is much more scope in copywriting for good old fashioned 'hard media.' I'm talking about books, magazines (you know, the ones you have to go to the newagents to buy), newspapers, corporate copy etc. I know that most of the above have online versions, but to me that always feels like a fleeting shadow of the real thing. A gimick, a fad, not real. Is it just me?

With that in mind, I have been thinking about my ideal project. The kind of thing I want to be working on, who I want to be working for. I don't want to spend my time fiddling about with other people's websites, contributing to blogs and writing meaningless online reviews. I'm not saying I'll avoid them, but what I really want to be doing is writing copy that people can pick up in their hands and read, the old fashioned way. Something that can be left on the seat of a train for someone else to pick up, or can visit a library (remember those?) to see.

Most of all, I want to help people to tell their stories, to rave about their passions, to read my words on paper and say 'Yes! That's exactly what I meant!'.

So, here's what I'll be looking for in order to get that illusive ideal client...

Those wanting a copywriter to assist with writing copy for family histories or memoirs, of which I have experience.
Those wanting articles or reviews to submit to trade magazines.
Those wanting to have a design for a staff or client newsletter, and to have support in writing regular copy for this.
Those needing copy for in-house publications, such as training manuals or guidelines.

Family History Projects

In my last post, I talked about the project I was working on with my mum, writing up her memoirs. That got me thinking about other personal projects I have worked on in the past, specifically tracing my family tree on my father's side. I spent just over a year researching my father's family, with very little background to go on, and I ended up going back 5 generations.

Tracing the entire history of a family with nothing but your grandparents names and a very vague idea of where they came from is a challange, but the internet holds endless information if you know where to look. The information doesn't always come cheap, if you want to ensure that the information is accurate, you will have to search on reputable sites such as ancestry.co.uk, and you have to pay membership to view any documents. You also have to 'buy' birth marriage and death certificates in order to verify details, and proceed with further parentage etc., but it's really not that costly, and the end results can be surprising.

As it turned out for me, my family didn't actually come from where I thought they had come from, and the reason for their move from one county to another was a bit of a shocker! Because my father's grandmother was married to a farmer and she ran away to London with the hired labourer to start a new life in London! This couple became my great grandparents. There are so many unexpected twists and turns, but I find it fascinating how I came to be who I am.

Current Projects/Update

Still here! I know I've been a bit naughty in the lack of posts for a bit, I can only apologise. So, here is what I'm up to at the moment...

I begin this week by attending 2 meetings with Ketley Parish Council, and I will be helping out with writing for their December Newsletter, and also a document they are producing for local residents in December.

I will be completing the recordings for Mum's memoirs, and then plan to get them typed up and printed with photos. There will only be 2 copies printed, one for her and one for me.

I have almost completed my leaflet, which details the kind of writing I do etc.

I have uploaded 2 articles which I wrote onto Squidoo, which can be viewed here and here. A couple more are in planning, so will give you the word when they're up!

I will be re-launching my newsletter, A Writers' Muse next month. Instead of being monthly, it will now be every 2 months. If you would like a copy, please email me at tezzy077@hotmail.co.uk

Just back from Devon

I've just spent a week in North Devon, in a lovely barn conversion in the countryside. I'd never been to this part of Devon before, but I have to say it was better than I expected. Such a pretty and relaxing place.

We were close to a place called Bideford, nice little town, and on our first day we hired bikes and cycled along the Tarka Trail. Well worth it just for the lovely views. And talking of great views, we also stumbled upon Harland Quay and Point. The drive down to the quay is breathtaking, both for the view and the extremely steep road leading down to the sea! We didn't do the whole walk, due to the wet weather, we cut it short and had luch in the hotel there, which was very nice.

As we were so close to the border of Cornwall, we skipped over to Bude, and then found the Tamar Otter Sanctuary on the way back. That was brilliant! We got there at feeding time, and the guide took us around the grounds to meet the otters - so cute! There is also woodland where you can see deer and owls and wombats and all sorts of things, and for 50p, you can purchase a bag of feed. With a bit of patience, you can let the deer eat right from the palm of your hand!

Great holiday. Glad to be back.....??

No faith in the internet

I'm feeling a little bit angry. I have just spent some time researching for an article I was going to write, and as I normally do, I consulted the internet for the facts, and then tried to verify those facts using, in this case, 2 different dictionaries. And what did I find? Everything I had researched was totally wrong. The words I had listed did not exist. And the info I got was from 2 different websites, which had probably used the same source, of completely made up information!

What a complete waste.

Just goes to show, anybody can put anything on the internet.

Researching an article

I have spent some time doing research for personal projects I am working on, and I thought I would share with you some of my tools and resources.

It’s so simple with the internet to find information when you are researching, without even having to move at all. But although it is a very useful tool, you do have to be careful to take whet you read with a pinch of salt. You should never trust the information of just one website, without finding more evidence on the facts backed up by other sources.

Remember also that a large percentage of what you read on the internet is not verified as truth. In many cases, it will be based upon someone’s opinion, and has not been read by an editor, as would be with a published book.

As an example, I have recently spent some time researching whether or not orbs are really evidence of ghosts. The first thing I did was typed ‘orbs’ into Google, and looked at Google Images at photographs of orbs taken by lots of different people. Then I selected some of the websites relating to the images I found to find out what the story was behind them.

Of course, some of the stories were by people who believe the orbs are real, and some believe that they are fake.

But they are all just opinion, no proof either way.

So how can I find that proof? Well, with something like this, I can’t, but I can draw my own conclusions, and write my article based upon this.

If however, I was researching something non-speculative, such as the history of a building, or facts about a particular breed of dog, I could then go further in my research, and gain facts from a variety of sources. I might still use Google as a starting point, but then I would also look up sites relating to Dog Breeders, search for newspaper articles about that breed of dog and news therein, and even check my library for books and magazines about dogs. I might also talk to people who have an interest in that subject.

Some useful resources might include:

Local Publications
Libraries
Talking to people (including those you know!)
News Websites such as BBC, SkyNews, The Guardian Online.
Google Searches by Keyword
Searching for sites or companies which relate to your subject

In conclusion, when I need to research for whatever I am writing, I utilise a variety of sources to ensure that what I write is true fact, and if I can’t prove it to be fact, I leave it out.

This morning I have been mostly browsing the net...in the name of research, of course...!

Actually, I bought the whole trilogy, as Waterstones had a 3 for 2 offer on them. Trying hard now to finish the book I'm already reading so that I can start on them!!

This afternoon, I am going to approach sme mags for the articles that I meantioned last time - I need to tweak them a liitle before I go ahead and submit them though, so if I have time today I'll get on to that too.

Catching up to do...

I have so many things that I've started in the past and just not got around to completing, so I have made a list of all of them, and am going to be working on them as from now. My first projects are to edit a review I did recently for a new tanning product, and send it out. I also have my recycling article, which needs a bit of a re-write before I look at sending that one out. I want to make arrangements to finish the biography recording I started a while ago, and get it typed up for her. An on top of that, it's July already, and I have to write this months newsletter to send out to my mailing list! Aaaaaaggggghhhh! Must get to work!!!!

I haven't written any fiction in quite a while, and I've had this really good idea for a story in my head. I'm going to write some notes on that soon, and see if I can make something out of it.

Back to basics

I hit a bit of a stumbling block with my writing, so I decided I'd simplify things a little. Sitting indoors with my laptop was not bringing me any inspiration, so I've gone old-school, and set up a temporary writing desk in the garden.

You don't really need anything other than a pen, some paper, and your own imagination to be able to write, and I actually often find things work better for me that way. Sometimes the computer screen kills my thinking - somewhere between my brain and the keyboard my words are blocked and scrambled. Sometimes I just feel more relaxed with no tech around me. It comes out much more naturally.

Since I have a nice new garden to play with, I have started to experiment, and am having a go at growing potatoes in a special grow bag. Most of my garden is lawn and shrubs, so not much space for planting. If I'm successful, I might try something similar with other veg next year. Here is a picture of my 'veg patch'!

Puppy Love

Let me introduce you to our new rescue dog, Lea. If you've read my previous posts, you'll know that she's a rescue dog, and although we did have some concerns before we brought her home, we are amazed at how quickly she has settled in here with us.

The first time we met Lea at Roden, Dogs Trust, she greeted us with such excitement, she really was beside herself! We took her for a walk on the grounds, and she was so responsive, when we called her, she immediatelly came running back to us even though she'd never met us before. She was so affectionate, we simply couldn't leave her behind.

When we got her home, we were surprised that she responded to all the basic commands we asked of her. She will sit, shake paw, lie down, leave, and fetch with no trouble at all. Whoever was responsible for her before she came to us obviously had spent a lot of time with her. It makes me wonder what the circumstances were for her being placed at the dogs home. If someone had loved the girl so much, how on earth could they want to leave her? We were told that she was too rough with children, and yes, she is very energetic - she's only 2 years old, but we have introduced her to lots of people, and she seems to be a very sweet girl to whomever she greets.

I just think that it's very sad when for whatever reason, you are forced to give up a dog like that. She has quickly become part of our family, and is lovingly accepted by everyone in our lives who comes to meet her.

In any case, being a dog owner is mostly a joy. I say mostly not because of any problems we have had with Lea, but of the lack of consideration of other dog owners. What I mean by this is that in towns like mine, like many places, there are places where people commonly go to walk their dogs. Ours is a footpath which leads to a circular walk through some trees and around a hill. If you walk around it alone, it's a nice place, but with a dog, my opinion of it, and other dog owners has changed.

You'll know what I mean if you own a dog - you tend to look more at the ground and less at your own eye level. And some of the things you find are, to put it kindly, gross. There is rubbish strewn everywhere, and you wouldn't believe the amount of dog-poo. Absolutely disgusting. Let me tell you that my rule is, if Lea does her business under bushes or in long grass, where no-one is likely to walk, I do not have to pick it up, unless I think I need to. However, if it's in clear sight, or is where someone is likely to walk, it gets picked up in a bag and thrown in a bin. Simple as that. I feel so bad that other people don't consider this. I take Lea out for a walk 3 times a day, and very rare is it that I don't have to sidestep or hop over another dog's mess.

It's really not on, and if there's something I can do about it, please do tell me, because I'd really like to see something done about it.

Reviews, Marketing, and Pooches

Quite a productive morning. Last night, I made a list of things I wanted to get done today, and I'm more than halfway through already. I work better if I have a list - it makes me feel like I'm acheiving something if I can cross thiongs off as I complete them, and it helps me keep tabs on where I am in my projects. This morning I have sent out 2 seperate mailouts, and submitted a review to a local publication. I have 3 short articles to write, and I now have accounts with squidoo and helium, and will be submitting content to both regularly, so I will be letting you know what's new on those when I can.

Our puppy-dog, Lea, is settling in very well indeed. She is 2 years old, and has been quite well trained already, but she has so much energy! We have been taking her for 2 or 3 20 minute walks every day, plus she has playtime in the garden, and she still chases us around with her toy in her mouth! But she's a lovely girl, and has welcomed every single visitor we've had in the house with no problems at all. I will post some pictures up here when I get the chance.

An unexpected arrival.

For the past couple of months, my boyfriend has been going on and on about wanting to get a dog. Both of us have had dogs in the past, but I have been reluctant for us to get one together. But last weekend, he suggested that we go to our local dog rescue centre...just to have a look.

Roden is about a 15 min. drive from where we live, and specialises in re homing dogs from all sorts of backgrounds. On arrival, I was surprised at how busy the place was, there were already 3 or 4 families in reception waiting to see the dogs.

We went around the site, I was still a bit guarded as we saw several beautiful pooches, of all types and breeds. The fist one we stopped at was a tiny little terrier, and his information panel stated that he was most comfortable with women...I get from that he has a problem with men, and my theory was proven when David knelt down to greet him and was responded to with bared teeth and frantic barking.

We saw a Dalmatian who appeared distraught to be there, and cried constantly. She was a gorgeous looking dog, but much too big for what we were able to cope with (see, my guard is dropping already!).

On the other side of the site, we met a golden retriever named Dutchess. She cam immediately to the front of the cage when we passed, greeting us with a graceful wag of her tail. We stopped for a few moments to admire her and her King Charles companion, Mo.

On the way back to the reception, David asked if we could go back to the first set of pens, something had caught his eye...we walked up and down again, and stopped in front of an unmarked cage holding a female Staffie cross. All the dogs around her were barking, but not she. She at there calmly regarding us and we had to know more about her.

We went back to reception and found out that she was a new addition there, her name was Lea. We also asked about Dutchess, and discovered that she had a problem with her sight, and would need some extra care, for she was likely to go blind within the next year or so.

David and I discussed these options, and decided that we would like to meet Lea. We greeted her, and then were able to take her for a walk. She was as good as gold! Needless to say, she is coming to live with us next weekend. It took less than 10 minutes to fall in love with her. So, I will be kept busy, and no doubt will be posting news of her progress here shortly!

The lost art of letter writing.

When was the last time you had to write a letter? Today, with the popularity and convenience of email, we no longer have to sit down and construct a formal letter or memo (remember those?!), as it is now perfectly acceptable to write a casual email to pretty much everyone we need to communicate with. But does this mean that we have lost this craft forever? Is it no longer important to formally write a letter, and to get it right? sampleletters.org is an excellent resource to help you to properly construct a letter, whatever your needs. At the very least, it is a reminder of an art that is all but forgotten, and might never be learned by later generations.

The heat is on...

What a whirlwind of a week! We are officially moving house on Monday, so I am surrounded by boxes filled with all my treasured possessions, and I can't find any of the stuff I need!

It's all go go go. This morning I had 50 prints made of my sevices list, so will be dishing those out early next week. Also, waiting on my business cards to be posted to me, I ordered them from moo.com and they are going to look fab! I am now officially a writer.

The memoirs are still being worked on, and need to complete recordings after I have moved, so that I can get on with typing it all up. So all in all, things are coming together, and I'm feeling really positive about it.

Progress?

Today, I intend to get a big chunk of recording done for the memoirs I am writing. It's been going pretty slowly, she's been away on holiday and as a result, I only have a couple of hours of recording so far. So last night, I drafted out some guideline questions to keep us on track, and so can hopefully get quite a bit of the information we need.

There's quite a bit of local history involved in this one, as she has lived in this area all her life, so it's really interesting to travel through time with her, and experience all the changes that have happened in the past 60 years or so. I have some local history books which I hope will inspire her to tell me a bit more about that, which in turn will give a better insight into her own past.

Incidentally, there has just been quite a big redevelopment in this town of Madeley, so to take it from the original village, to part of a big New Town in the 1960's, to something else altogether this year will be something really great to have record of, from someone who has personally witnessed it all!

Sorry I've not updated this for such a long time. I'm having issues with my laptop. My new one had to be returned as it was faulty, and my old one seems to want to type the letter q over and over and over again. Not good, but I can at least use the internet, I just have to remember not to try logging in to anything! I'm typing this on my boyfriends machine while he's out at work.

Interview begins!

I have started recording my subjects history, for her memoirs. So far so good, but a lot of ground yet to cover. I think this is set to be a very interesting project.

Have lots of rough ideas for new articles -and now I have my new laptop set up, will get them written!!

Annoyingly, the voice recorded I ordered has not arrived yet. I'm really hoping it will get here tomorrow, I have had to put off the interview I had arranged for the weekend, and instead we just discussed the period of time she would most want to concentrate on, and the sort of thing she was expecting from the finished article. I'm really excited about getting started with this one.

In the meantime, I have completed the first draft of my plastics article, which s it turns out is much shorter than I thought it would be, at 560 words. But, this is just a first draft, so it may go through some changes yet!

I am also about half way through a piece about depression, gathering both my own experiences, and others on the web. I think this will be less than 200 words - or that's what I'm aiming for. I also have plans for short pieces covering various other angles on this subject, which I may or may not look at next.

New Toy

I bought this today. I'm going to begin interviewing this weekend, and get a rough idea of the layout and structure for the memoirs.

I'm also still outlining some ideas to pitch, I have approached Auila magazine, with an idea for a 'Family Tree' project for children. There might be potential for other articles based around that idea fro other markets....just something to think about!

I have emailed the Shropshire Star about my recycling article. No news there yet, and Telford & Wrekin Council never did get back to me with their stats, so nothing to back up the 'local' side of the story, I was aiming for. I'm thinking I'll make it more general, and push it elsewhere.

Still got my various scribbles based around depression and mood. Will be working more on those, and pitching some ideas soon. Lots of possibilities with this one, so I'm fining it hard to settle on one!

It's a bit dull this evening, so I think I'll just spend some time going through my ideas and put them in some kind of order, so I can do some pitching the weekend.

Switching gears

I've got a lot on right now, with moving house, buying a car (after mine was written off after some kind person crashed into it....while it was still parked outside my house!), trying to write in between! Since I spilled tea on my laptop, things like the letter 'a' and the tab key only work when they feel like it, so I'm having to type a little more carefully than normal!

I've been looking at the possibility of ghostwriting. Something else to add to my portfolio...which, ok, is empty at this moment in time, but I'm hoping that it won't stay that way for too long! Still, it's all good practice, even if my work isn't being read 'out there' yet! Keep plugging, and something will come.

I will be approaching some more publictions this week with ideas - have little scribbled notes everywhere with possible articles and interview outlines on - just need to think about what I want to do with them, and see if there's any interest out there.

What I'll be doing over the next few days:

Looking at targets for various 'depression' linked articles I have planned.
Chasing up the Shropshire Star regarding my recycling article.
Looking at possible targets for Ghostwriting.
Sending more emails to potential commercial clients.

Ah, the holiday is over, and tomorrow I go back to work. I have the small issues of not having a car, moving house in a few weeks, and the fact that I spilled tea on my laptop and now it keeps doing weird things.

My sister is due to go into hospital today to have brain surgery. That's quite stressful. But she's being positive about it, so we owe it to her to be positive too.

This week, I want to spend some time drafting up some new article ideas, and looking at potential markets to pitch. I have already emailed some people with ideas for corporate writing, so I will see what comes from that.

A little progress

Today, I have typed up the first draft of my recycling article, which just needs some bits of local information adding, and possibly some illustrations. I have also typed up my tips on how to feel happy, which I am setting up as a mock magazine article, complete with illustration.

Doesn't look much really! I'm off to Dublin tomorrow, so I will update again on my return, Friday.

Time flies....

I have drafted two new articles today. The first one touches on my experiences with depression, and is a focus on how to overcome the negative emotions that come with it, and gain confidence. There's no scientific focus, it's just some stuff that I researched, that worked for me.

The second piece is more research than writing at this point, and it focuses on travelling, and how to do so as cost effectivly as possible. It's aim is really students and young people travelling alone, on a budget, but a lot of the content could really apply to anyone.

Forward Planning

I have spent this evening researching a few ideas for new articles. If I can get them drafted this week, I can begin looking at potential markets at the weekend, and then start pitching.

The idea that I've already drafted is about the environmental impact of plastics and why it is essential that we make more effort to recycle them. Learning quite a lot about this - there are so many obstacles making the recycling of this material difficult, but so many benefits. And there are some, cheaply made plastics which will probably never be reclycled, and will continue to cause damage to our planet for a long time to come. Are there ways we can help to reduce this damage? I think there is, but people need educating as to how they can do this, and local authorities don't seem to give enough information.

I have pitched this to a local publication here in Shropshire - awaiting response.

It's unusual for me to update a blog twice in one day. I have been floating around the internet for the past couple of hours, in the name of research, looking at various freelance sites, publications and the like. Pretty inspiring actually. I've been thinking about what exactly it is I want to achieve from this little freelancing venture. and thus far, I have come up with the following "Ideal Project Profile"...

Writing and researching factual articles, of varied interest.
Copywriting.
Letter Writing/Assisting with mailshots.
CV's
Basic Editing.

As my experience and confidence grows, this list will grow and evolve.

Funny how things work out. For the first time in years, I have something to aim for, a path to follow. And it feels great!

I am about to embark on an adventure - I know not where it will take me, but I'm very excited about it. This adventure is called "Freelancing".

I have taken the first steps, by pitching to a couple of publications, and have contacted some old colleagues to let them know my plans.

My main work will be research and articles, but I have so many interesting ideas, I just don't know where to start!! So, let this first blog be a simple introduction, and I hope you will keep visiting to check for updates and news!
